Pitaya bears the name of a Chinese fruit, and its large polychrome motif is embroidered onto an ikat jacquard — two techniques layered so the cloth is patterned twice over. The ikat ground supplies its soft, feathered blur; the embroidery rises from it in crisp relief; and the conversation between the two is the design's real subject. Generous in scale and spirit, it makes upholstery into an event.
