Samarai carries an all-over pattern of concentric circles suggestive of Aboriginal sand and rock paintings, a recurring theme in Aboriginal art. Hand-tufted, it plays a ground of New Zealand wool loops against lines of cut pile that stand as if sculpted in relief, so the motif is felt underfoot as well as seen. The result has the gravity of its sources and the depth of proper making.
