Sandy is an embroidery of shells on a linen plain weave, made to evoke the necklaces made and worn by Aboriginal people — objects of pearl, shell and bone whose record in Australia goes back five thousand years. Such a necklace denotes the status of its wearer and can play a protective role. It is the first time the House has drawn on this source, and the design carries its origin with respect.
