Frottage is the business of laying paper over a textured surface and rubbing until the texture comes through. Rubelli used it to design a fabric, taking the imprint of one cloth and weaving the result as another, which is a roundabout way of arriving at a plain and produces something better than a plain: a surface with grain in it and no pattern to place.
Yarn-dyed and reversible, and heavy at 681 g. Thirty thousand Martindale rubs puts it into daily use as upholstery, and the casualness of the surface means it will sit with almost anything. Sixteen colourways, each of them reversible, 135 cm wide, made in Italy.
