Gio Ponti drew this in the early Fifties, and the motifs have the look of woodblock prints done without much fuss: simple shapes, a domestic vocabulary, decoration that declines to take itself seriously. Woven into silk, that plainness works harder than a grander design would.
The ground is a silk satin made with three-ply yarn twisted in Italy and a high number of threads to the centimetre, which is what produces the depth of the lustre. Against it runs a fine cotton weft dyed to tone with the warp, so the matt figure appears as a change of surface rather than a change of colour.
