Knots are the point here. A particular yarn throws up small nubs across the ground chenille, and because they fall irregularly the surface reads as something made by hand rather than by machine. They are also worth touching, which is not usually true of an outdoor cloth.
It is Tempotest solution-dyed acrylic, so the colour is in the fibre and not on it: 7 out of 8 for light fastness, 4 out of 5 in sea water and in chlorinated water.
