Cuoridoro was the Venetian trade name for the makers of gilded leather, a craft the city practised for centuries: hides gilded and then used to line walls, chairs and the covers of books. The pattern here comes from one rare surviving example, in a room of the Renaissance Palazzo Vendramin Calergi.
It climbs vertically, as those leather panels did, flowers and leaves and fruit linked by rocaille volutes drawn out of acanthus. The cleverer part is the ground. Deliberate floats of weft are left loose across the satin so the surface takes on a grain, and the cloth reads as tooled hide rather than as woven silk. The repeat is long at 86 cm, which a design of this sort needs in order to develop.
