Wool is the surprise. Soft wool wefts come up through a silk ground, which is not how a sixteenth-century damask was made and is exactly why this one does not look like a reproduction. The pattern is the classic one; the hand is not.
Underneath sits a cannete ground, ribbed, which breaks the flatness a damask usually depends on and is the other modern element. The repeat is small for the type at 35 by 23 cm, so the figure is dense and reads as texture from across a room. Cotton, acetate, wool and silk at 460 g, five colourways. Rubelli publish no abrasion figure for it, so treat it as a decorating cloth: curtains, blinds, cushions, a panel. 135 cm wide, made in Italy.
