Inlaid marble in the church of the Gesuiti in Venice is the source, and inlay turns out to be the right analogy for how the design is built. Within the main figure sit smaller patterns, each cut to fit its neighbours precisely, the way a stone-cutter has to work, with no gaps and no overlap.
The result is busy at close range and quiet from across a room, since the micro-patterns average out into tone. Cotton with silk at 280 g and nothing synthetic in it, which is uncommon in a damask of this weight. A 61 cm vertical repeat, seven colourways.
