An eighteenth-century floral, reduced. Enough of the original drawing survives to place it, but the ornament that would once have filled the gaps has been taken out, and what remains is a single flower at a size no eighteenth-century weaver would have permitted. The vertical repeat runs a full metre, which is what that scale requires.
The cloth beneath is silk and the pattern is worked in mercerised cotton weft, raised and slightly matt against the silk's own sheen. The effect is closer to embroidery than to weaving, and the shadow between the two surfaces is what gives the flower its depth. There is no metallic yarn in it and no printing involved; the shine is the silk.
Rubelli name their floral designs after women, which is where this one gets its name. Four colourways at 370 g, rated for decoration: curtains, blinds, cushions, panels. 138 cm wide, made in Italy.
