Toile de Jouy, at something like the scale toile was originally printed: the vertical repeat is 165 cm, longer than most sofas and taller than most people, so the scene has to be planned into a room rather than simply ordered by the metre. Figures in eighteenth-century dress move through a glade with neoclassical belvederes behind them, and the drawing has the crowded, conversational quality the good toiles have.
Printed on pure cotton at 280 g and rated at 20,000 Martindale for upholstery, though the repeat argues for a curtain, a blind or a wall where the whole picture can be seen at once. Two colourways, 140 cm wide, made in Italy.
