Doubling a pattern on top of itself is a modern trick, and it is what has been done here to a handwoven silk velvet from the Rubelli museum. The original motif runs twice and overlaps, so the figure reads twice at once, sharp in one register and shadowed in the other.
It is a brocade rather than a velvet: silk and viscose with a little metallic yarn, 400 g, 135 cm wide. The horizontal repeat of 67.5 cm is exactly half the width, so the design falls twice across the cloth, while the 82 cm vertical keeps the rhythm long. Six colourways. Rubelli places it with curtains, blinds and cushions. Made in Italy.
