The variety is the point here: a range of motifs, several registers of pile and a rich set of colours, held together by the tonal shift where cut pile meets uncut. The source is a French original of the eighteenth century and the drawing follows rococo rules closely, all movement and no straight lines.

It is woven at 60 cm, the loom width, with a 65 cm vertical repeat, so a single unit runs slightly taller than the cloth is wide. Silk pile on a silk and cotton ground, 200 g, one colourway.

This is hand work at Cucciago on nineteenth-century looms, measured in centimetres a day, and it belongs where it can be looked at closely: a cushion, a panel, the back of a chair. Made in Italy.
