Print onto chenille and the ground refuses the dye while the pile takes it. Rubelli built Kaleidoscope around that behaviour: the colour sits only on the raised fibres, so the pointillist pattern comes up in relief instead of lying flat. The reference is murrine, the Murano glass canes sliced across to reveal a mosaic in section, and a dense field of small coloured dots reads much the same way.
The hand is close to velvet. The repeat runs 40.5 cm vertically over 64.5 cm across, and 21,000 Martindale points it at chairs, headboards and cushions rather than a sofa in daily service. 131 cm wide, made in Italy. Design Formafantasma.
