The pattern is late eighteenth century, but the reading of it is nineteenth: the eclectic revival took the original, enlarged its rhythm and gave it back, and it is that version Rubelli has woven. A flowering bouquet sits inside a frame of broad leaves resolving into curled acanthus, the whole figure held in relief across a 62 cm vertical repeat.
Seventy-five per cent cotton to twenty-five per cent silk, a blend that descends from the Caffart damasks made through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries with a silk warp and wefts of linen, cotton or wool, and used almost entirely for furnishing. The silk takes light on the figure; the cotton keeps the ground quiet behind it.
