What the weave produces is chiaroscuro, light and shade moving across the surface the way it does over a lacquered panel, where the depth belongs to the finish rather than to any drawn line. The figure is large, a 79 cm vertical repeat over 67.5 cm across, but low in contrast, so it registers as movement before it registers as pattern.
