Rococo does not stack its ornament, it lets it wander. Leaves and flowers move through this brocade in one unbroken line of growth, turning back on themselves where a classical design would have squared off, and the 85 cm vertical repeat gives the composition room to finish the gesture before it begins again.
Five fibres go into it, silk, cotton and linen among them with a metallic yarn running through, and the metallic is what lifts the figure clear of its ground, catching light where the matt fibres refuse it. Seven colours, 140 cm wide, made in Italy. Suited to upholstered furniture in a classical room, and to curtains long enough to show the repeat whole.
