Rousseau painted jungles he had never seen, leaf by leaf, and the foliage in Lemongrass has the same quality: dense, deliberate, simplified until each frond is a shape rather than a species. The matelassé construction does the work shading would do in paint. The linen weave holds the relief high, and the contrast of light against dark reads almost as though the surface had been scratched into.
