Late Renaissance pattern, worked as a lampas: several different metallic weaves laid over a silk satin ground, so the ornament is built from changes in surface rather than changes in colour. Where one weave meets another the light breaks, and the figure appears.
Six fibres are involved, silk, linen and cotton among them with a metallic yarn running through, on a repeat close to square at 65 cm by 69.3 cm. It is rated for light use, which is what a cloth of this construction should be doing in any case: curtains, blinds, cushions, panels. Ten colours, 140 cm wide, made in Italy. In a room with panelling or a good cornice it will look as though it was always there, and in a plain room it will do all the work by itself.
