Small scale is the unusual thing here. The repeat is 34 cm by 35 cm, which for a brocade of this richness is close to a sprig, and the effect is an all-over rather than a set piece: flowers covering the ground evenly, the detail surfacing only when you are near it.
The variety is in the textures, several different weaves worked across a silk ground, with 2 per cent metallic yarn doing a very small amount of work in exactly the right places. Rated for light use, and best in drapery and decoration where it can fall in soft folds rather than be pulled flat across a frame. Five colours, 140 cm wide, made in Italy.
