The subject is a single figure, the Indian sovereign himself in pale dress against a coloured ground, and he is the only thing depicted. That restraint comes straight from Mughal miniature painting, where the sitter is the whole business of the picture and everything else is setting.
The repeat is long, 109 cm vertically over 70.5 cm across, so the figure appears large on a curtain drop and is worth positioning deliberately rather than leaving to chance. The jacquard has a silky surface and no interest in pretending to be hard-wearing: it is rated for decoration only, and not for upholstery of any kind. Curtains, a panel, a run of cushions.
