Eighteenth-century chinoiserie took its scenes at second hand and never much minded the inaccuracy, which is part of why the results are so peculiar. The figures here are given as flat coloured silhouettes in silk against a metallic ground that carries most of the light in the cloth, so they read as cut-outs on a bright field rather than as a picture with depth.
It is a lampas, cotton and silk with a small percentage of metallic yarn, on a repeat of 66 cm by 70 cm. Rated for light use and best where it can hang: curtains, panels, a headboard, cushions.
