The original was a mid-eighteenth-century Venetian fabric and only part of it survives in the Rubelli archive. The style department reduced its scale and then redrew the missing sections, which is restoration as much as design. What you get is a document completed rather than a document copied.
The motif is a Louis XV meander, a lace-like wandering line, and the light in it comes from a single bright white weft rather than from any metal. There is no metallic yarn in the cloth at all. Because that weft stays light against whichever ground it crosses, the pattern reads with the same clarity in every version.
At a 25 cm vertical and 17.5 cm horizontal repeat this is a small-scale figure, which suits a chair or a cushion better than a long curtain, where a drawing this fine tends to disappear into the folds. 410 g, 140 cm wide, made in Italy.
