A rarefied floral, taken from a mid-eighteenth-century textile design and stripped back until the shapes are simple and the ground has room to show. Ramage is the old word for foliage used as ornament, branching growth drawn as pattern, and this is a spare version of it. The figure stands in relief, so the effect is of a large, rough embroidery rather than of a woven print.
The pattern stays neutral in every version and the colour sits in the ground behind it, which is why the design holds its character right across the range.
