The source is not a single fabric but a patchwork of Renaissance velvet fragments in the Rubelli archive, worn thin in different places and to different degrees. Rather than restore them, the design reproduces the wear: a particular weaving technique gives the pattern an abraded, rubbed-out quality, as though the figure had been walked over for four hundred years.
At 260 g it is light for a damask, and the crinkled finish adds its own irregularity on top. The vertical repeat is 115 cm against 67.3 cm across, half the 135 cm width, so this is a large design and it needs a long drop to be understood.
