Rubelli asked the English painter Sally Anne Fitter for a picture of flower vases, then printed it. The painting stayed a painting: the roses keep the loaded brush and the soft edge, and the vases sit as objects rather than as motifs, arranged so that the empty ground between them does as much work as the flowers.
That arrangement needs room. The repeat is 86 cm vertically and 48.5 cm across, so a single length of the 150 cm cotton faille carries only a few vases, and the design is best judged on a window or a long sofa rather than on a dining chair. Faille has a fine crosswise rib, which breaks the print very slightly and keeps it from looking photographic. 25,000 Martindale.
