Two constructions in one cloth. The damask ground does its work with weave alone, figure and field woven from the same warp and weft and separated only by the direction the threads face, so the pattern appears and disappears as you move around the room. The brocading is laid over that: additional wefts carried across only where the design calls for them, floated where they are needed and cut away behind, which is the slow part of the work.
The repeat is large, 63 cm vertically by 69.2 cm across on a 140 cm width, so a single width holds two figures and no more. Cotton with viscose and silk, 315 g a metre, five colourways. Made in Italy.
