Five different yarns run through the weft, worked in close shades of a single colour, and the result is a plain that refuses to stay plain: horizontal lines break the surface into a loose geometry that shifts as the light moves. The wool in the mix is what you feel first, and it is doing structural work, since the relief depends on it.
All twelve versions are built over the same white warp, which Rubelli likens to the clear glass in Carlo Scarpa's murrine. That warp yarn is evo nylon, spun from castor seed rather than from petroleum. 140 cm wide, 500 g a metre, 20,000 Martindale, made in Italy.
