Free marks scattered across a satin ground, matte against shine, in no order you can predict. Rubelli heard a saxophone in them, which describes the rhythm better than it describes the shapes. The ground carries the whole effect: the satin weave holds light, the marks refuse it, and the pattern only really appears once the cloth is hung and the light starts moving.
