Gold and silver wefts trace the ornament across a satin ground, and the drawing is a sixteenth-century one: the slow winding scroll that Italian interiors used from the first half of that century onwards. It is a discreet sort of grandeur. The figure never fills the ground, and the metal is used as line rather than as mass.
That restraint is what makes it usable. A lampas this classical could dictate a room; this one will sit in a modern interior or a period one without insisting on either.
