Rubelli | Sheesh Mahal

Indore's Kanch Mandir is lined floor to ceiling with small coloured mirrors, and the embroidery here works after it: motifs that flash colour against a ground that does not. That ground is an ivory jacquard checkerboard, quiet and regular, and set into it are two embroidered figures, an armchair and a vase, on a 47.5 by 33.5 cm repeat.

It is an odd and likeable pair of subjects, domestic where the source is sacred. There is one version only, and Rubelli offers it for decoration rather than for use: curtains, blinds, a cushion, a panel. Viscose with polyester and cotton, 440 g a metre, 140 cm wide. Embroidered in India.
