Sumi is ink painting done in a single colour, where everything depends on how much water is in the brush, and the difficulty of translating it to cloth is obvious: a loom has no wash. Rubelli's answer was to vary the weave instead, using a wide range of bindings to grade the surface from dense to nearly empty, so a landscape appears as a change of texture.
The repeat is large, 66 cm vertically by 70 cm across, which suits a subject that needs room to fade out.
