Medieval Italian churches laid their floors as carpets of cut marble, geometry repeating without end, and the jacquard takes those figures directly. What it does not take is the scale. The repeat here is 4 cm by 3 cm, so what once covered a basilica floor now covers a dining chair, and the pattern reads as dense texture until you are close enough to pick out the shapes.
