Stylised flowers, small animals, pieces of oriental porcelain and shapes that are not anything in particular, embroidered across a cotton satin in scenes that never quite join up. The mood is chinoiserie handled lightly. The drawing is charming without being sweet.
One version only, multicoloured, on a 64 by 65 cm repeat, which is a large scale for embroidery and gives each scene room to be read on its own.
Two things govern how it should be used. It is rated for light use, so decoration rather than seating, and its colour fastness to light is 3 out of 8, which is low. A north window, a blind out of direct sun, cushions in a shaded room. 130 cm wide, 270 g a metre, embroidered in India.
