Flowering branches undulate up the cloth in parallel bands, the standard mid-eighteenth-century treatment, handled here in green, pink, orange and yellow over a hazel satin ground. It is a warm design rather than a grand one, and the colours sit close enough together that it never becomes busy.

The repeat is 67 cm on a 60 cm width, so the branches run taller than the cloth is broad and a complete pass of the design needs a panel or a long drop to be seen properly.

It is still woven on the traditional hand looms to the technical specification of the centuries it comes from: silk pile on a silk and cotton ground, 200 g, 60 cm wide, a few centimetres of output a day. Cushions, panels, chair backs and screens, not seats. Made in Italy.
