Someone found seventeenth-century embossed leather on the wall of a room in a Venetian palazzo above the Grand Canal, and this cloth is what came of it. The transfer from one material to another is the interesting part: tooled leather carries its pattern in relief and in shadow, and a lampas has to find that depth in weave alone, which it does through the ground rather than through the figure.
The vertical repeat is 112 cm, very large, so plan the drop before ordering. Linen and silk with acetate and viscose, 360 g a metre, seven colourways, 135 cm wide. Rubelli rates it for light use, which places it: curtains, blinds, cushions, a wall panel. Made in Italy.
