Four other figured velvets in this collection share this specification exactly: a silk pile on a 64/36 silk and cotton ground, 200 g, 60 cm wide. What separates them is the repeat, and 45 cm sits at the shorter end of that group, so a complete unit of the design fits inside a cushion, a chair back or a narrow panel without being cut through.
The technique is soprarizzo, cut pile set against uncut loop in the same weave, so the figure appears as a difference in surface rather than in colour and moves as the light does. There is no metallic thread in it, which means everything rests on the two registers of pile and on the drawing.
One colourway. Woven by hand at the Cucciago mill on nineteenth-century looms at a few centimetres a day, and intended for cushions, panels, chair backs and screens. Made in Italy.
