Schumacher | Sissinghurst Crewel

Sissinghurst Crewel is a densely worked botanical in the Jacobean manner, its stylised flowers and meandering vines chain-stitched in heavy wool yarn onto a plain cotton canvas. The embroidery gives the cloth pronounced texture and relief, so the pattern reads differently depending on the light and angle. At nearly a metre tall the repeat is large enough to be read as architecture on a sofa back or full-length curtain.

It is made in India, woven and embroidered from sixty per cent cotton and forty per cent wool, and 128 centimetres wide with a vertical repeat of 99 centimetres and a horizontal repeat that runs the full width. Dry cleaning is recommended. The weight and relief of the embroidery suit upholstery, cushions, curtains and blinds where the texture can be appreciated at close range.
