Threads | Air

Air is a wide-width sheer from the Threads Winch Design Indoor I Outdoor collection, made with Winch Design so a voile can be hung on a loggia or a covered terrace as happily as indoors. It is a fine, open plain weave that filters strong light rather than blocking it, softening the edge of a covered outdoor room in the day and giving privacy after dark when the space behind it is lit. At 290 centimetres wide, it is designed to be railroaded, so most openings can be curtained without a single seam.

The cloth is 100 per cent acrylic, 290 centimetres wide, with no pattern repeat. There is no rub count published, as befits a sheer, and the page lists it for curtains rather than upholstery; being part of the Winch Design range it is suited to an outdoor as well as an indoor setting. It comes in a single colourway, Snow, a soft, bright white that reads as a natural extension of the light around it.

We tend to use Air on a covered terrace or veranda, hung from a track or a pole the width of the opening, and indoors as the inner layer of a two-track treatment in front of a heavier curtain or a blind. It pairs well with one of the Winch Design textures on the seating nearby. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Because the cloth is 290 centimetres wide it is railroaded: the width becomes the drop, and you order the length of the track, times the fullness, rather than a number of widths. Outdoor sheers move more than an indoor voile, so ask your maker to allow a generous hem and a weighted tape; the cloth can be machine washed cool on a minimum wash and cool ironed, or dry cleaned professionally.
