Threads | Avalan

Avalan is a textured cotton-jute weave from the Threads Faraway collection, with a dry, slightly coarse hand that comes from the jute content, and a 19 centimetre horizontal repeat that reads as a soft, irregular grain rather than a pattern. It has the natural, hand-worked character the Faraway collection is known for, closer to a loosely woven basket than a conventional furnishing cloth, with a texture you notice as much under the hand as from across a room.

The cloth is 70 per cent cotton and 30 per cent jute, 133 centimetres wide, with a 19 centimetre horizontal repeat. It is rated at 20,000 rubs on the Martindale test, a moderate figure, so we would keep it to curtains, cushions and occasional chairs rather than a family sofa, and the page lists it for curtains and for loose and fixed upholstery. It comes in a single colourway, Indigo, a deep, slightly faded blue that pairs with almost any neutral and looks particularly good against natural stone and timber.

We tend to use Avalan for full-length curtains in a study or hallway, on a bench cushion, and on an occasional chair where the natural texture can be appreciated up close. It pairs well with the plainer Faraway weaves and with a print from Faraway Wallpaper on the wall. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Keep the weave direction consistent across widths, since the jute content gives the cloth a slight grain, and match the horizontal repeat where it is visible. Line and interline curtains for weight, and dry clean only; the jute content means it should never be washed or ironed directly.
