Threads | Avior

Avior is a rich, multi-fibre textured weave from the Threads Luxury Weaves II collection, combining linen with cotton, wool, nylon, viscose and bamboo into a dense, tactile plain with a fine, slightly irregular grain. The linen and wool together give the surface real body, so the cloth has the weight and presence to carry a large piece of furniture on its own, without ever feeling stiff or overworked.

The composition is 42 per cent linen, 20 per cent cotton, 12 per cent wool, 11 per cent nylon, 8 per cent viscose and 7 per cent bamboo, on a 133 centimetre width with no pattern repeat. It is rated at 40,000 rubs on the Martindale test, so it is rated for upholstery, and the page lists it for curtains and for loose and fixed upholstery. It comes in a single colourway, Linen, a warm, soft neutral that works with almost any scheme.

We tend to use Avior on sofas and armchairs where a plain has to carry the room, on a large ottoman, and as heavy curtains where the weight of the cloth helps the drape. It pairs well with a printed cushion from Faraway or a striped weave from Great Stripes on an occasional chair. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

With no repeat, quantities are straightforward, but the weave has a visible grain, so keep the direction consistent across every panel and cut all pieces for one item from the same bolt to avoid shading. Line and interline curtains for weight, and dry clean only; the wool content means it should never be washed or ironed directly, and a hidden seam is worth testing first.
