Bowery Stripe is a printed stripe from the Threads Faraway collection, a group of prints and embroideries with an artisanal, hand-crafted feel. The composition mixes a fine pinstripe with a broader block stripe, so the rhythm has depth and variety rather than a single mechanical beat, and because it is printed on cotton rather than woven, the edges of the stripes have a slight softness, as if they were ruled by hand. It reads as relaxed and a little urban, which suits the name.
The cloth is 100 per cent cotton, 135 centimetres wide, with a 27 centimetre horizontal repeat and no vertical repeat. The page lists it for curtains and for loose and fixed upholstery; no rub count is published, so for seating we keep it to occasional chairs, headboards and cushions. It comes in a single colourway, Spice, a warm, dusty terracotta on a natural ground that pairs well with ochres, deep greens and the Faraway indigos.
We tend to use Bowery Stripe for curtains in a kitchen or a family room, for Roman blinds where the stripe can be seen flat, and for a bench cushion or an occasional chair. It sits well with the plain Meridian Linen and with the Faraway embroidery on cushions, and it is a good way to warm up a room with white walls and pale timber. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
Quantities are straightforward with no vertical repeat, but the stripe should be matched across widths and centred on each panel; ask your maker to place the seams on a stripe boundary. On chairs and cushions, decide on a vertical or horizontal run and keep it consistent across the set. Line the curtains to protect the print from sun, and dry clean only.
