Threads | Bulsa

Bulsa is a small-scale textured weave from the Threads Quintessential Naturals collection, a group of easy, unfussy woven cloths for curtains and blinds. The weave carries a tiny, regular structure, 6 centimetres by 5, that reads from a distance as a soft, even grain, a little like a fine basket weave or a hand-loomed cotton. The cotton and linen blend gives it body without stiffness, and the cellulose content adds a dry, natural crispness to the surface.

The cloth is 45 per cent cotton, 40 per cent linen and 15 per cent cellulose, 137 centimetres wide, with a 6 centimetre vertical and 5 centimetre horizontal repeat. The page lists it for curtains, and the collection is designed for curtains and blinds; there is no rub count, so it is not a seating cloth. It comes in a single colourway, Parchment, a warm off-white that sits between chalk and string and works with almost any wall colour.

We tend to use Bulsa for full-length curtains in a bedroom or living room where we want texture rather than colour, and for Roman blinds in a kitchen or bathroom where a plain would look flat. It pairs well with a patterned cushion from the Nala Prints or with a heavier textured plain on the sofa. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

The repeat is small enough to be ignored for quantities, but the weave has a visible grain, so keep the direction consistent across widths and match the tiny structure at the seams where you can. Line the curtains, and interline them if the window is large, to give the cloth enough weight to hang in soft, even folds; the cellulose yarns mean it should be dry cleaned rather than washed.
