Threads | Cala

Cala is a textured plain from the Threads Luxury Weaves collection, woven mainly from viscose and cotton with small amounts of jute, linen and other fibres worked in for strength and texture. There is no motif, only the fine, slightly irregular grain of the weave itself, which catches light softly across a sofa arm or a curtain fold. It is the kind of quiet, architectural surface we reach for when a room needs texture rather than pattern.

The composition is 49 per cent viscose, 35 per cent cotton, 11 per cent acrylic and small amounts of jute, linen, nylon and polyester, on a 137 centimetre width with no pattern repeat. It is rated at 50,000 rubs on the Martindale test, so it is a proper upholstery cloth as well as a curtain fabric. It comes in four colourways, Parchment, Indigo, Soft Grey and Pebble: Parchment is the warm neutral, Indigo is the graphic choice, and Soft Grey and Pebble sit quietly between the two.

We tend to use Cala on sofas and armchairs where a plain has to carry the room, on a tall upholstered headboard, and as heavy curtains where its weight helps the drape. Pair it with one of the Faraway prints on cushions or a single occasional chair, and let the rest of the scheme stay tonal. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

There is no repeat, but a viscose-rich weave can shade slightly along the roll, so cut all the pieces for one item from the same bolt and keep the direction of the weave consistent between seat, back and arms. For curtains we line and interline for weight; dry clean only, and ask for loose covers to be made with that in mind.
