Calisto is a textured plain from the Threads Fascination collection, woven from cotton, viscose and polyester into a fine, even grain with no motif at all. It has a slightly cooler, more matte surface than some of the other Fascination cloths, which suits the deep, graphite tone it comes in particularly well. It is the kind of considered plain we use when a room needs weight and depth rather than pattern.
The composition is 45 per cent cotton, 36 per cent viscose and 19 per cent polyester, on a 137 centimetre width with no pattern repeat. It is rated at 35,000 rubs on the Martindale test, so it is rated for upholstery, and the page also lists it for curtains. It comes in a single colourway, Graphite, a deep, cool charcoal that grounds a room without ever going fully black.
We tend to use Calisto on a sofa or a pair of armchairs where a dark plain needs to anchor the room, on a window seat, and as heavy curtains where the depth of colour reads well against pale walls. Pair it with a printed cushion from the Faraway collection or a lighter textured weave elsewhere in the scheme, so the darkness has contrast to work against. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
With no repeat, quantities are straightforward, but darker, viscose-rich cloths can show shading between dye lots, so cut all the pieces for one item from a single batch of cloth. Line and interline curtains for weight, and dry clean only; do not bleach or iron it directly, and keep it away from harsh, direct sun to protect the depth of the colour over time.
