Threads | Coast

Coast is a fine, tightly woven performance plain from the Threads Winch Design Indoor I Outdoor collection, with a small 13 centimetre repeat that shows as a subtle, even grain rather than any visible pattern. Developed with Winch Design for use inside and out, the polyolefin construction gives it a slightly drier, more technical hand than a natural fibre, along with real resistance to sun, salt air and washing, without looking or feeling like a technical cloth once it is made up.

The cloth is 100 per cent polyolefin, 138 centimetres wide, with a 13 centimetre vertical repeat. It is rated at 30,000 rubs on the Martindale test, so it is rated for upholstery, and the page lists it for curtains and for loose and fixed upholstery, indoors or out. It comes in five colourways, Cloud, Earth, Ocean, Marine and Moss: Cloud is the soft neutral grey, Earth a warm brown, Ocean and Marine the two blues, and Moss a grounded green for planting-heavy schemes.

We tend to use Coast on outdoor sofas and dining chairs, as curtains on a covered terrace or in a garden room, and indoors on a window seat or a family sofa where washability matters. It pairs well with the other Winch Design weaves and with teak, stone and powder-coated metal. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

The 13 centimetre repeat should be matched across widths and centred on cushions and seat panels. Covers can be machine washed cool on a minimum wash or dry cleaned professionally; do not tumble dry, bleach or iron them, and use a solution-dyed thread and outdoor zips if the pieces are going to live outside for the season.
