Cubist is a geometric vinyl wallcovering from the Threads Vinyl Wallpaper collection, an abstract group with a finish that resembles the natural textures of linen and canvas. The design is a tonal arrangement of geometric blocks, each edged with a gilded or contrasting line, so the wall reads as a softly layered composition of planes rather than a sharp graphic, and the textured surface takes the edge off the geometry. It is architectural without being cold.
The paper is a vinyl on a paper backing, 68.5 centimetres wide, with a 76.2 centimetre vertical repeat and a 68.5 centimetre horizontal repeat, a half-drop match, and it is hung paste-the-wall. Being vinyl, it is spongeable and hard-wearing, which makes it usable in hallways, cloakrooms and bathrooms as well as living spaces. It comes in three colourways, Parchment, Indigo and Mineral: Parchment is the pale option for a whole room, Indigo is the deep blue for a study or dining room, and Mineral is a soft grey-green that works with stone.
We tend to use Cubist on the long wall of a dining room, in a downstairs cloakroom where the geometry can be enjoyed close up, and behind a bed in a guest room. It pairs well with plain linen curtains and with a textured weave on the seating, so the wall carries the pattern on its own. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
The half-drop match with a 76 centimetre repeat is the thing to plan for: allow one repeat of waste per drop, and expect a 10 metre roll to give three drops on a standard 2.4 metre wall, so a 4 metre wall needs two rolls. Paste the wall with a heavy-duty adhesive, butt the joins and roll the seams gently; vinyl needs the wall to be sound and sealed, so size it first.
