Threads | Drumlin

Drumlin is a heavy textured weave from the Threads Quintessential Textures collection, a group of substantial upholstery cloths in soft neutrals. The surface has a pronounced, slightly irregular grain, built from a mix of viscose, linen and wool yarns, so it looks like a natural cloth and behaves like a technical one. There is no motif, just a dense, tactile surface that gives a plain sofa or chair real presence without adding colour or pattern.

The composition is 48 per cent viscose, 34 per cent linen and 12 per cent wool, with small amounts of cotton, polyester and nylon for strength, on a 140 centimetre width with no pattern repeat. It is rated at 50,000 rubs on the Martindale test, so it is rated for upholstery and will cope with daily family use, and the page also lists it for curtains. It comes in a single colourway, Linen, a warm, mid-toned natural that hides marks better than an ivory.

We tend to use Drumlin on the main sofa in a living room, on a large ottoman, and on dining chairs where the texture stands up to constant use. It pairs well with a printed cushion from the Nala Prints or a striped Great Stripes cloth on an occasional chair, and with heavy plain curtains in a matching tone. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

With no repeat, quantities are straightforward, but the weave has a direction, so ask your upholsterer to keep the grain running the same way on every panel and to cut all pieces from one bolt to avoid shading. The cloth is substantial, so have the seams trimmed and pressed open on tight corners and consider piping in a lighter cloth if the profile looks bulky; dry clean only.
