Threads | Entwined

Entwined is an embroidered geometric from the Threads Variation collection, a group of modern statement embroideries and weaves. Interlocking lines are stitched in rayon thread onto a cotton ground, so the design sits slightly proud of the cloth and catches the light along every stitch, giving the pattern a low sheen against the matte base. With a repeat of 54 by 32 centimetres it is mid-scale: clearly a pattern up close, a quiet trellis of texture from across the room.

The cloth is 90 per cent cotton and 10 per cent rayon, 128 centimetres wide, with a 54 centimetre vertical repeat and a 32 centimetre horizontal repeat. The page lists it for curtains and for loose and fixed upholstery; there is no rub count, so for seating we would keep it to occasional chairs and headboards rather than a family sofa. It comes in a single colourway, Slate, a soft blue-grey that sits well with pale oak, chalky whites and darker charcoals.

We tend to use Entwined for a tall upholstered headboard, where the stitched line can be seen at eye level, for a pair of occasional chairs in a living room, and for Roman blinds in a study. It pairs well with the plain Meridian Linen or the Meridian Velvet in a tonal shade, so the embroidery is the only pattern in the room. Embroidered cloths need a little more care in the workroom: match the repeat across widths, keep the embroidery direction consistent, and ask your upholsterer to use a soft, flexible interlining behind it on headboards so the stitches do not press through. Allow one full repeat per drop for curtains, line them, and dry clean only, without ironing directly onto the stitching.
