Threads | Etching

Etching is a hand-drawn print from the Threads Nala Prints collection, worked at the largest scale in the range, with a repeat of 41 by 35 centimetres. The marks are looser and more graphic than in the smaller prints, so the design reads clearly across a room, carrying the same debt to West African tribal architecture and textiles as the rest of the collection but with real scale and confidence. The cotton-linen ground keeps the surface matte.

The cloth is 90 per cent cotton and 10 per cent linen, 138 centimetres wide, with a 41 centimetre vertical and 35 centimetre horizontal repeat. It is rated at 26,500 rubs on the Martindale test, which puts it in the everyday range for upholstery rather than the heaviest-use tier, and the page lists it for curtains and for loose and fixed upholstery. It comes in four colourways, Indigo, Charcoal, Teal and Dove: Indigo is the deepest and most graphic, Charcoal and Dove are the quieter neutrals, and Teal is the collection's signature blue-green.

We tend to use Etching for curtains in a living room where the large scale can be read properly, for an occasional chair where use is moderate, and for cushions on a plain sofa. It pairs well with a plain linen or a Quintessential Naturals weave for the main seating. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

With a 41 centimetre repeat, allow a full repeat per drop when calculating curtain quantities, and match the pattern carefully across the width given the scale of the drawing. Centre the motif on a chair seat or cushion before the cutter starts, and line and interline curtains to protect the cotton-linen ground from sun; dry clean only.
